Ben Mantle

I stepped through the Hikaru no Go gateway in 2006, started teaching in 2008, and trained in South Korea in 2009. In 2021 I left my software career to Go full-time: teaching, streaming, building this community, and training for the North American Pro Qualifiers.

I like to understand my students on a deep level and draw on my own journey for advice that actually resonates. Believing in your own potential is the cornerstone of improvement.

“The journey is the reward.”

The community

The family, in their own words

Joining the BenKyo League has not only helped me improve my Go, but it’s given me the sense of community that I’d been missing for years. I’ve moved up about two stones on OGS in the few months I’ve been playing in the league (the longer time settings for higher stakes help improve game quality!), and getting to see others grow as well has been great. Lots of room for rivalry, growth and teaching, and it’s been fun watching the league grow and more members get involved!

About two stones stronger, on OGS

It is the heart of the BenKyo community and is populated with friendly people who watch each other play their league games with interest. Stronger players leave variations in game records, and there is often lively discussion on the BenKyo Discord Server. Actually the community is so special that it is hard to put into words. … I strongly recommend players from DDK up to 3 Dan to consider instruction from Ben Mantle.

Almost every SDK and Dan player in BKL has offered some level of insight to my games. I absolutely love it here!

FAQ

Fair questions

How do I actually join?
Memberships run through Patreon today (the prices above), and lessons on their own through Ko-fi, as hour packs or a monthly plan. Not sure which fits? Send an inquiry and I’ll point you at the right one, no hard sell.
Can I look around before joining?
Yes, and it’s free. Over 900 Go players hang out in our community chat on Discord, and my YouTube channel has free class samples. Come say hi.
Where are league games played?
Online, on OGS (online-go.com), which is free to use. BenKyo League is international and runs around the clock: you arrange each game with your opponent in the community chat, at a time that suits you both.
What time zone are you in?
I’m on Eastern time (North America), and my hours vary. The league doesn’t wait on my schedule: it’s international and runs around the clock, with members playing all over the world.
How do I reach you?
Discord is the quickest: message me in our community chat. You can also email me at benkyobaduk@gmail.com, or use the form above.
Do the programs stack?
Yes. Each tier includes everything below it: the League includes the Study Group, and the lesson tiers include both. One membership, one community.
Do I need a membership to take lessons?
No. The Patreon lesson tiers include the League and Study Group; lessons on Ko-fi, whether hour packs or a monthly plan, are just the lessons on their own.
How do the league game reviews work?
Play at least one Main League game in a month and Ben records a personal review video of your game that month: a teacher explaining your decisions, not an engine graph.
How much time does the league take?
As much as you want to give it: there is no participation requirement. Main League games run in small divisions that fit a busy month, and the Title Tournament is an open free-for-all (any member, any agreed handicap) for when you want more. Games are set up in the community chat, impromptu or scheduled ahead.
Is this for me if I am brand new?
If you know the rules, yes: classes and homework meet you where you are, and lessons are built around your own games at whatever level they are. Complete beginner? Ask first and I’ll be honest about fit.

Your move.

Pick a plan, ask me anything, or come say hi first.
